In short

Grief and loss therapy at Counseling Services for Wellbeing supports Seattle-area adults carrying the death of someone close, prolonged or complicated grief, anticipatory grief and losses that are not a death, like divorce, estrangement, a hard diagnosis or miscarriage. We do not put a timeline on your grief or ask you to get over it. We accept most major insurance plans, book same-week first appointments and meet you at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video statewide.

Does this sound familiar?

The world moved on and you are still standing in it.

The casseroles stopped coming. The texts asking how you are slowed down. Everyone around you seems to have folded back into ordinary life, and you are still moving through the day with a weight nobody can see. You catch yourself reaching for the phone to tell them something before you remember.

Maybe people have started to hint that it has been a while, that you should be further along by now. Maybe you have heard that they are in a better place, that everything happens for a reason, that time heals. None of it touches the actual shape of what you lost. Some days the grief is quiet and some days it knocks you flat with no warning, and you have started to wonder if something is wrong with you for still feeling it this much.

There is nothing wrong with you. Grief is not a problem to be solved or a timeline to be hit. You do not have to get over them. The work is finding a way to carry them with you and still move with your life.

What we offer

Grief therapy for adults carrying a loss the world expects them to be over.

The death of someone close

A partner, a parent, a child, a sibling, a friend. The fresh loss and the kind that still aches years on.

Grief that feels stuck

Months or years on and it stays as raw as week one. Prolonged or complicated grief that will not loosen its grip.

Anticipatory grief

A loved one in hospice or living with a terminal diagnosis. Grieving someone who is still here, and carrying the caregiving too.

Traumatic and sudden loss

A death that was sudden, violent or witnessed. When the way it happened keeps overshadowing the person you are grieving.

Loss that is not a death

Divorce, estrangement from family, a hard diagnosis, infertility or miscarriage, a move that took your whole life with it.

Grief that surfaces as something else

Numbness, irritability, broken sleep, a body that will not settle. When the loss is showing up everywhere but in words.

First-time-therapy adults are welcome. You do not need to have words for the loss before you reach out.

Our approach

How grief therapy works here.

We meet your grief where it actually is, making room for the loss and the person you are grieving, rather than steering you toward a tidy ending.

1

Reach out

A short form or a call. We hear who or what you lost, how the grief is showing up and what you have already been carrying. No assessment battery, no need to explain why it still hurts.

2

Get matched

We pair you with a therapist whose approach fits your loss. Grief-informed and meaning-centered work for making room for the loss. EMDR when the way a death happened keeps the grief locked. The right fit, not the next open slot.

3

Start this week

First appointment in person at one of three Seattle-area offices or by secure video anywhere in Washington. Same therapist each session. The early sessions are about telling the story of what you lost and being met in it, at your pace.

The approach

Support to carry it, not get over it.

Grief-informed therapy gives the loss room to be what it is, and meaning-centered work helps you stay connected to the person or life you lost while you find your way forward. For grief that stays stuck, we draw on approaches developed for prolonged and complicated grief, which the American Psychological Association notes can keep mourning intense long after a loss.

Grief-informed and meaning-centered work for making room for the loss. EMDR for traumatic loss when the memory itself is keeping the grief locked. CBT for the guilt and intrusive thoughts that can travel with it. We match the approach to your loss, and we never put a clock on it.

Frequently asked questions

What adults ask before starting grief therapy.

Do you take my insurance for grief therapy?

We accept Kaiser, Premera, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. Coverage for therapy can work differently by plan, so we will confirm exactly what your plan covers before your first session. You will not be left guessing about cost.

How soon can I be seen?

First appointments are available the same week, not weeks out. Grief does not wait for a four to six week waitlist, and you should not have to either. Reach out and we will find the first opening that fits.

Is there a right amount of time to grieve?

No. We do not put a timeline on your grief or treat a longer mourning as a problem to fix. Some people come in weeks after a loss and some come in years later. Grief moves at its own pace, and the work is about finding a way to carry it, not getting over it on a schedule.

Do you work with losses that are not a death?

Yes. Divorce, estrangement from family, a hard diagnosis, infertility or miscarriage, a move or a major identity shift can all carry real grief, and so can other large life transitions. We make room for the losses that others may not name as grief, including the loss of what you hoped would happen.

What is complicated or prolonged grief?

Sometimes grief stays stuck, with the loss feeling as raw as the first week, intrusive memories or a sense that you cannot move with the day. We work with grief that feels stuck or layered, including multiple losses close together, without pathologizing the depth of what you feel. When low mood settles in alongside it, depression therapy can be folded in.

Do you offer EMDR for traumatic loss?

Yes. When a death was sudden, violent or you witnessed it, the memory itself can keep the grief locked. EMDR is available on the team for traumatic loss and trauma, so the way it happened stops overshadowing the person you are grieving.

Do you offer grief therapy online or only in person?

Both. You can meet in person at our Green Lake, Burien or Smokey Point offices, or by secure video anywhere in Washington with online therapy. The same therapist either way. On the heavy days when leaving the house feels like too much, video is a real option, not a downgrade.

Take the next step

You do not have to carry this alone, and you do not have to be over it first.

Grief therapy can give you room to grieve at your own pace and a way to carry your loss forward, and you can start this week. Counseling Services for Wellbeing accepts most major insurance plans, books first appointments the same week, and matches you with a therapist who makes room for your loss rather than rushing you past it, in person at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video across Washington.
