Often the goal of therapy is for clients to develop the capacity to resolve personal problems with the support of a therapist. The time it can take to achieve the therapeutic goals is based on the individual needs of each client, couple, family, child and adolescent. As people become more accepting of themselves, they are more capable of finding happiness, contentment, and making positive changes in their lives. Self awareness and self-acceptance, and changing habits are goals that sometimes take a long time to achieve. The clinicians at Counseling Services for Wellbeing, Inc. work collaboratively with the clients to build on their existing strengths, enhance relationships, increase and procure a support system and obtain the necessary skills and tools to lead a happier and more fulfilling life. We strive to work in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, tailoring to each client’s individual needs and goals to help achieve the personal growth they are striving for.
Individual therapy is a collaborative process between the therapist and the client. It is a unique relationship that offers support, perspective and new skills that can help a person confront barriers that interfere with emotional mental well being. The journey often begins by discussing what issues motivated you to seek out individual therapy. Together you and the therapist explore the parts of your life that don’t seem to be working anymore. Patterns and habits that were once effective may no longer be working and could be preventing you from being where you want to be. Maybe you really need someone to listen actively and attentively. Maybe you are not sure what is going on and you need someone to ask questions to help you figure it out.
In therapy the relationship of trust and confidentiality is paramount. The therapist pays attention to who you are now, what you are bringing in to the session and how to best address your current needs. In the work together, the therapist will support you, challenge you, provide resources and sometimes give you an assignment to help you. Your experience in therapy will provide you with new tools to help you navigate your life in a healthier and more optimum way. Therapy can increase positive feelings, self-esteem and provide a renewed sense of self that is stronger and clearer about who you are becoming and how to move forward. There is great sense of accomplishment in the therapeutic journey of becoming more self-aware.
There are a myriad of reasons why a couple may seek therapy. Communication, work related issues, parenting, financial stressors, sex, problems with friends, infidelity, in laws, need for affection or adoration, these are just a few. Most relationships are vulnerable at one point or another to issues such as these. It is often difficult for an individual in the relationship to contain their thoughts and feelings regarding a troubled relationship and not let it impact everyday functioning. Relationship issues often permeate through other areas of ones’ life. A difficult relationship can result in pain, stress, low self esteem, impact on occupational/educational functioning, attention and concentration, parenting and overall happiness.
When a couple comes into the office, they are also bringing in their own familial experiences, expectations, disappointments and miscommunications. It is important to consider both partners and understand the presenting issues. Maintaining healthy long term intimate relationships is hard work. Relationships often need care and attention and this can be difficult because of the fast paced, chaotic lives we often lead. The therapist will explore the goals of therapy and the history of the relationship as well as each individual’s familial experience (if the information is pertinent to the current circumstances). The therapist will work with couples to identify core issues, conflicts and relational patterns that may be contributing to some of the presenting issues. In addition, finding the strengths and common goals in the couple’s relationship will be integral to the process of therapy.
The goal with couples’ therapy is to find more successful ways of interacting, develop healthier means of relating, use effective tools in communication and restructure a strong foundation for their relationship to grow and flourish. Therapy will provide a safe, responsive place to discuss issues and concerns. Through the course of therapy, individuals will be better able to manage other areas of life and make sound and healthy decisions regarding their relationship.
